We are a student organization at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign dedicated to bringing awareness to social justice issues pertaining to incarceration. Our aim is to create safe, productive spaces to learn about and discuss all aspects of incarceration. Ultimately, we hope to foster a community of individuals that are truly passionate about reforming the penal system of the United States.
We offer two branches of programming:
First, we organize monthly forums and a bi-weekly lunch dialogue series that address an aspect of incarceration such as mass incarceration, the collateral impacts of incarceration, drug laws, juvenile justice, immigration, and systemic racism. Each of our forums feature a guest speaker and it has been our tradition to close each forum with a group discussion. We also host bi-weekly coffee and tea discussions.
Second, we run C.U. Succeed, a mentoring/tutoring program that works to foster positive interaction between mentors and community youth for the purpose of providing these youth with accessible academic social resources. This is done through the efforts of individual tutors, in partnership with public institutions. Mentors form relationships of advice, connect mentees to helpful resources, and focus on the overall well-being of youth.
We are also the proud student affiliate of the Education Justice Project.
